Noun declension – Neuters Ι
Like masculine and feminine nouns , neuters also are divided in 2 categories : isosyllava and anisosyllava. There are 3 subcategories for each of them …So we can present the whole picture in 6 tables .
In general , we can notice that all nouns in each number have 3 declensions similar – nominative, accusative and vocative , p.e. το άλσος, τα άλση (changes only in genitive becoming του άλσους, των αλσών).
The anisosyllava neuters in the genitive of the plural are stressed always on the ante-penultimate syllable.
The genitive of the plural of all neuters is ending in -ων.
Let’s examine each category separately.
ΙΣΟΣΥΛΛΑΒΑ
- In the first subcategory are those ones ending in -ο. Such words are το παλτό, το νερό , το ποσό, το φτερό (wing) etc. Let’s decline the word το φτερό
| Nominative | Genitive | Accusative | Vocative |
| το φτερό | του φτερού | το φτερό | φτερό |
| τα φτερά | των φτερών | τα φτερά | φτερά |
- In the second one belong these ending in -ί , like the neuters το αρνί , το σφυρί , το αηδόνι , το χιόνι , το καλοκαίρι ..Let’s take the word το αστέρι (the star) p.e.
| Nominative | Genitive | Accusative | Vocative |
| το αστέρι | του αστεριού | το αστέρι | αστέρι |
| τα αστέρια | των αστεριών | τα αστέρια | αστέρια |
- The last subcategory of isosyllava is the ones ending on -ος, like το βέλος, το άλσος, το βρέφος (the baby), το δάσος (the forest)…
| Nominative | Genitive | Accusative | Vocative |
| το δάσος | του δάσους | το δάσος | δάσος |
| τα δάση | των δασών | τα δάση | δάση |
Due to lack of time the last days I have to break this post in two pieces. I will examine the anisosyllava in my next post. It is late now and I have to prepare my bag for a long journey to Molista.
It is a Greek village on the Pindos mountain range where my father’s family comes from. We have some maintenance to do on our house there. Since I come back from there I will leave for Piestany resort in Slovakia where I will follow an Esperanto meeting.
Hope to find an interval so I can post all about the anisosyllava neuter nouns …

Crap, ος messes things up for us. Before that, you could say that ος always follows the article. But no biggie either.
Genitive always follows the article (except for ος where it gets an extra ς)!
Other cases are just like the nominative.
Then ος changes to η, otherwise the plural ends in α whether it is because you have to add it or because you have to change ο to α (these are similar sounds).
It might be a bit too late to make conclusions yet but let’s say so.
By the way, did you know that in all Indoeuropean languages the accusative of neuter words isuniversally the same as their nominative. I think it even extends to the words itself too. It even works in Lithuanian! I was once talking to a woman online about Latin when she told me this. That’s a peculiar feature of these languages. On the other hand, it makes it easier to learn things this way.
΄Εχετε ένα μεγάλο σπίτι, και η πόλη του είναι πολύ κοντα στα σύνορα τις Αλβανίας. Αλλά δεν υπάρχουν Αλβανοί έκι, ετσι δεν είναι;
Do not have either the time to make conclusions …So let’s leave it until my next post. Thank you for providing the link for Neurolingo !!!
Έχουμε ένα όχι και τόσο μεγάλο σπίτι στο χωριό (όχι πόλη) που είναι κοντά στα σύνορα της Αλβανίας. Υπάρχουν κάποιοι Αλβανοί εργάτες στις οικοδομές και στους κήπους, γιατί οι περισσότεροι κάτοικοι είναι συνταξιούχοι…
Ι have to run now , because it is 4 hour trip from Larissa to Molista…
Wow, I “only” had to translate “κήπους”, “κάτοικοι” and “συνταξιούχοι” to comprehend that sentence. Even thought that’s a lot and I wouldn’t probably have understood the last sentence without translating it, still, My Greek is improving.
Καλή ταξίδι!
No doubt you are getting better day by day …
Καλό ταξίδι , στο ταξίδι σου με την Ελληνική γλώσσα.
